malaysiangTASEK GELUGOR, Penang will discuss the proposal to build a livestock waste processing centre in Kampung Selamat here to resolve pollution in Sungai Kereh caused by the discharge of waste from pig farms.
State Housing and Environmental Committee chairman Datuk Seri S Sundarajoo said the proposal will be brought to the state executive council meeting this week before a meeting with relevant agencies are held to further discuss the direction of the project.
‘I’ve received many complaints about the pollution in Sungai Kereh, which has also been brought up rather often during the state assembly.
‘Therefore we need to speed up efforts to build a livestock waste processing centre here as it is a need so that all farm discharge can be channelled directly to the centre and restore the quality of water that has been polluted for so long,’ he told reporters here today after spending more than two hours inspecting the pig farms and abattoir in Kampung Selamat and Sungai Kereh with Penang Department of Environment (DO
E) director Norazizi Adinan and Penang Veterinary Services Department Regulatory Division Chief Dr Tishrin Muhammad Ismail.
He expressed hope that the project would be realised at the end of this year or early next year so that waste management could be more systematic and resolve the longstanding pollution issue.
Meanwhile, Dr Tishrin shared that there were 61 pig farms in Kampung Selamat that have operated for around 40 years before other development existed here.
‘There are 130,000 pigs currently and all 61 farms actually comply with the minimum criteria for pig farming, especially modern livestock systems.
‘Every farm actually has a sewerage pond that will filter the waste washed from the farm daily and it is discharged (into the river) as it cannot be recycled in the farm,’ he said, adding that the state government’s proposal to build a biogas plant was something that every party, including farmers, had been waiting for.
