PENANG AIMS TO WIN 40 GOLD MEDALS AT UPCOMING SUKMA IN SARAWAK

GEORGE TOWN, The Penang contingent to the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Sarawak aims to achieve its target of winning 40 gold medals at the Games, scheduled to be held from Aug 17 to 25.

Penang National Sports Council (NSC) director Harry Chai Heng Hua said the estimation was based on the athletes’ determination during training, some of whom have been preparing for the past two years.

‘Our athletes do train continuously and those selected are the best to represent Penang to win medals in Sarawak,’ he said, adding that the contingent will contest 36 out of 37 sports involving 488 events, and hopes to win a gold medal in each event.

He added that the contingent of 786 athletes, coaches and managers are 98 per cent ready with 32 days remaining to the start of the Games, with the remaining two per cent being mental preparations.

‘In sports, we need to support and encourage, including ‘pushing’ them till the final moments of their competition so they can achieve their targets and win in their events,’ he added.

Penang won 30 gold medals in the last SUKMA in Kuala Lumpur, exceeding its target of 26.
