PBBM vows aid for affected Filipinos in quake-hit Taiwan


MANILA: President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. extended his sympathies to the people of Taiwan after it was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake early Wednesday.

In a statement posted on social media, Marcos also assured assistance to all the Filipinos currently in Taiwan.

‘Our hearts are with the people of Taiwan as they endure the aftermath of today’s powerful earthquake,’ Marcos said.

‘Rest assured, our Department of Migrant Workers is diligently ensuring the safety of the 159,480 Filipinos currently residing in Taiwan. We stand ready to assist and support our fellow Filipinos in Taiwan in any way possible during this difficult period,’ he added.

Taiwan was hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake past 7 a.m., the strongest tremor to hit the island in over two decades. The tremor’s epicenter was traced around 25 kilometers southeast of Hualien County.

Reports from the local media said at least 44 people were injured while four died.

The Manila Economic and Cultural Office earlier said all Filipinos and overseas Fil
ipino workers on the island are ‘all accounted for and safe.’
