PBAPP Installs New Pipe Worth RM2 Million To Address Water Supply Problems In Seberang Perai

BUKIT MERTAJAM, Perbadanan Bekalan Air Pulau Pinang (PBAPP) will install and operate a new RM2 million pipeline near the Seberang Perai Polytechnic campus in Permatang Pauh this Oct 4 to resolve water supply issues affecting the Seberang Perai area.

Its chief executive officer, Datuk K. Pathmanathan said the installation of the new pipeline is scheduled to be completed within 24 hours, from 10 pm on Oct 4 to 10 pm on Oct 5, during which there will be scheduled water supply disruptions in some areas of Seberang Perai.

“For that purpose, PBAPP has to close the 1.2 metre (m) (diameter) valve in the treated water pipeline and 97,000 water account users will be affected.

“PBAPP will also move water tankers, flex tanks and static tanks in some strategic areas. The affected users are advised to store enough water supply for the 24-hour period,” he said in a statement today.

According to Pathmanathan, the replacement of the pipeline is essential due to damage to a section of the main water pipeline near the poly
technic campus, which occurred during work by a third-party contractor on Sept 19, thus affecting water supply services in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) and Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS).

He said PBAPP had carried out an investigation at the site and found that the leaking part was located about 15 m below the big monsoon drain, which was difficult, dangerous and time-consuming to dig deeper to repair the damage.

Therefore, PBAPP decided to replace the leaking pipeline with a new 180m long pipeline, he added.
