IPOH, A one-year period to obtain religious teaching credentials in Perak is sufficient and very reasonable, the state legislative assembly was told today.
Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said teaching religion is a very important and heavy responsibility as it involves matters of faith and Islamic jurisprudence.
‘The Perak Mufti Department needs to be cautious in evaluating candidates who are truly qualified to be granted the teaching tauliah (credentials),’ he said when replying to a question from Mohamad Husairi Ariffin (PN-Kenering).
Saarani explained that the process includes applicants needing to complete the application form, which must be supported by the District Religious Administrative Officer before the candidates must sit for a written test for the Perak State Religious Teaching Certification Examination.
The written test covers seven subjects: Tauhid, Fiqah, Sirah, Hadis, Tafsir, Streams of Thought, and Tasawuf. This test is only conducted once a year, with approximately 150 to 250
candidates having taken it previously.
‘The process of marking the written test papers will be carried out by the question setters, who are members of the Perak Fatwa Committee and the Perak Islamic Religious Teaching Supervisory Committee, whose membership has been approved by the Sultan of Perak (Sultan Nazrin Shah),’ he said.
Saarani added that this process takes about three to four months for a thorough review to maintain the quality of the certification holders.
According to the regulations, he said the list of candidates who pass the written test must be presented at the Islamic Religious Teaching Supervisory Committee meetings, which convene three times a year for approval.
Once approved, the candidates will be called for an oral test, which is an interview with a panel consisting of members of the Perak Fatwa Committee and the Perak Islamic Religious Teaching Supervisory Committee.
