NATIONAL UNDER-19 TEAM HEAD FOR ASEAN TOURNEY ON A HIGH AFTER FRIENDLY WIN

SHAH ALAM, The national Under-19 football team gave themselves a timely boost ahead of next week’s ASEAN Under-19 Championship with a 4-2 win over Cambodia in a friendly today.

In the match played at the Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Stadium in Shah Alam, head coach Juan Torres Garrido’s boys got their goals through Danish Hakimi Salahudin (13th minute), Muhammad Arami Wafiy Mohamad Zakimi (25th), Mohamad Amir Farhan Mohd Fuzi (50th) and Izzat Muhammad Syahir Mohd Zulishan (80th).

Cambodia, under the guidance of coach Phea Sopheaktra, replied through Phoeuk Thatthai (26th) and UK Devin (30th).

Torres said he was satisfied with his team’s performance ahead of the ASEAN Under-19 Championship in Surabaya, Indonesia from July 17-29.

‘I think it was a better match than the first one (which they drew 2-2 with Cambodia on Friday). The players have grasped what is required of them. We are happy because we showed better strength than in the previous game. They understand better what we want to do in the game a
nd I think we are improving,’ he said.

In the ASEAN Under-19 Championship, Malaysia have been drawn in Group C with five-time winners Thailand, Singapore and Brunei.

Malaysia have lifted the title twice, winning it the first time under coach Bojan Hodak in 2018 before Hassan Sazali Waras guided them to the second triumph in 2022.

The Malaysian team will leave for Surabaya on Monday (July 15).
