KUALA LUMPUR, National junior badminton squad head coach Jeffer Rosobin is confident that his charges can add to their medal collection at the 2024 BWF (Badminton World Federation) World Junior Championships when the individual events kick off on Monday (Oct 7).
His optimism is based on the performance shown by the national shuttlers in the recently concluded team event.
“We stand a good chance in the individual events and I hope our shuttlers stay focused on the task at hand. To make up for our disappointment in the team event, we must continue to be more stable and consistent from the first round right up to the finals… we must maintain the momentum,’ he said in an audio clip shared by the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) today.
Yesterday, the national juniors settled for bronze after going down 110-76 to China in the semi-finals at the Nanchang International Sports Centre in China.
This matched their achievement in the previous edition in Washington, the United States, where they fell to the sa
me opponents and at the same stage.
Jeffer, meanwhile, said he was satisfied with the new format used at the prestigious world junior meet.
“We got bronze, am extremely pleased with this new system… the players adapted well to it,’ he said.
Based on the new format, each team will play 10 matches, namely two in each category – boys’ singles, girls’ singles, boys’ doubles, girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.
Each match will be played until 11 points and the first team to reach 110 points will win the tie.
