SEPANG: Reigning champion Francesco Bagnaia was handed a major boost for the qualifying round by emerging as the fastest rider in today’s Practice 2 session in the 2024 Malaysia Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) at Sepang International Circuit here today. The Ducati Lenovo Team rider clocked 1 minute 58.658 seconds (s) followed by current world championships standings leader Jorge Martin of Prima Pramac Racing (1:58.762s) in the second spot while Fabio Quartararo of Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP secured the third place (1:58.765s).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Bagnaia, fondly known as ‘Pecco’, asserted his superiority by coming out tops in both Free Practice 1 (1:58.795s) and Practice (1:57.679s) yesterday. Meanwhile, in Moto2 Practice 2, Albert Arenas of Gresini Moto2 S was the fastest after clocking 2:04.775s followed by Zonta Van Den Goorbergh of RW Racing GP in 2:04.878s and Tony Arbolino of ELF Marc VDS Racing Team completed the top three in 2:04.920s.
The two local wildcard riders representing Petron
as MIE Racing RW, Muhammad Helmi Azman and Khairul Idham Pawi, improved their time from yesterday. Muhammad Helmi clocked 2:07.203s in the 27th spot and Khairul Idham recorded 2:07.476s in the 30th position. Yesterday, Muhammad Helmi and Khairul Idham both secured the same positions in 29th and 32nd place respectively during Free Practice and Practice 1.
In the Moto3 class, Adrian Fernandez of Leopard Racing today showed a better performance as he improved his lap time to 2:10.102s and conquered the Practice 2 session. He was followed by teammate Angel Piqueras (2:10.284s) while Ivan Ortola of MT Helmets – MSI emerged third with a time of 2:10.488s.
