MELAKA: The Melaka government is committed to ensuring the safety of residents, particularly those living near the basin of Sungai Malim, from the threat of crocodiles. State Senior Executive Councillor for Housing, Local Government, Drainage, Climate Change and Disaster Management Datuk Rais Yasin said he hoped the Melaka chapter of the Department of Wildlife and National Parks Peninsular Malaysia (Perhilitan) would continue installing traps along the river to capture the wild animals.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Rais emphasized the importance of maintaining safety measures, acknowledging Sungai Malim as a natural habitat for crocodiles. He affirmed that Perhilitan would persist in their efforts to ensure residents’ safety by keeping trap installations active in the river. Additionally, traps will be placed in Kampung Morten in response to reports of crocodile sightings, despite the reptiles not being very large. Residents are advised to remain vigilant.
Rais addressed the media at Taman Malim Jaya f
ollowing the successful capture of a male saltwater crocodile by a Perhilitan Melaka trap, which had been set up last month. The crocodile, measuring 3.13 metres in length, was caught around 3.30 pm today.
A team of nine Perhilitan members was dispatched to Sungai Malim upon receiving information about the predator’s presence. This marks the third crocodile captured in the river this year, showcasing ongoing efforts to manage the crocodile threat in the area.
