LABUAN, March 19 (Bernama) — An engagement session was held by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Labuan Corporation with stakeholders at the Labuan Corporation (PL) office today.
The session, which was participated by heads of government departments, representatives of agencies under the Ministry of Communications and Multimedia and representatives of telecommunication network service companies, aimed at obtaining feedback on issues related to telecommunication systems in the federal territory.
The feedback obtained from this engagement session will help the MCMC to plan follow-up actions to improve the aspects of internet access and connectivity in Labuan.
For Labuan, MCMC is generally targeting 100 per cent 4G coverage in populated areas by the end of this year, it said in a statement.
The target is in line with national aspirations through the National Digital Network (JENDELA) Plan which sets 100 per cent 4G access in populated areas throughout Malaysia by 2025.
In Labuan, as of the fourth quarter of 2021, three out of the five new communication towers under the JENDELA Plan have been fully completed.
Two more new communication towers are under construction and are expected to be ready by the end of the second quarter of 2023.
In addition, a total of 86 communication transmitter sites have been upgraded to 4G while another 12 sites are being upgraded and expected to be completed in stages by the end of 2022.

Meanwhile, MCMC chairman Datuk Dr Fadhlullah Suhaimi Abdul Malek said some telecommunication service providers on the duty-free island were found to be providing poor quality services.
“This was detected during a random visit and quality service inspection at five locations. Their service will be inspected again, and if there are no changes, appropriate action will be taken,” he said after visiting the Keluarga Malaysia (Malaysian Family) Digital Economy Centre (PEDi) at Kampung Sungai Labu here.
