Magnitude 5 quake hits Davao OrientalAlgerian journalists dying in accident in Vietnam in 1974 commemorated

MANILA: A magnitude 5 earthquake hit Davao Oriental province on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

The tectonic quake struck 70 kms. northeast of the municipality of Banganga at 4:19 a.m. It was 17 kms. deep.

In Surigao del Sur, Intensity III was felt in Lingig, while Intensity II was reported in the City of Bislig.

Phivolcs, meanwhile, recorded instrumental Intensity I in the City of Tandag, Surigao del Sur, and the City of Cabadbaran, Agusan del Norte.

Reported intensity is the traditional way of knowing the intensity based on reports of people who felt the earthquake.

Instrumental intensity, on the other hand, is measured using an intensity meter that measures ground acceleration.

Aftershocks are likely, but no damage is expected from the magnitude 5 earthquake, Phivolcs said.
