KUALA LUMPUR, The Kuala Lumpur Football Association’s (KLFA) election for office bearers scheduled for Sept 7, may be derailed following the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) investigation into the club, which started yesterday.
The matter was announced by KLFA acting President Datuk Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid who said the date of the KLFA Election would depend on the MACC’s investigation which started yesterday and expected to last for 14 days.
‘Once the MACC complete the investigation, and if there is a wrongdoing, the election will be postponed, if there is no wrongdoing then Sept 7 is automatically the date set by the committee members to hold the congress meeting.
‘The investigation may be completed earlier and the congress will proceed as the date set or else the congress will be postponed,’ he said during a press conference at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras here today.
The nomination papers for the KLFA congress was supposed to be opened today by a neutral body but could no
t be done following the MACC investigation.
Abdullah Sani said the list of candidates can only be validated and announced after all the investigations have been completed, adding that only 28 clubs are eligible to participate in the congress.
‘The Sports Commissioner’s Office has cancelled the status of some clubs under the KLFA so the question arises whether they are eligible to participate in the election that will take place on Sept 7. The committee members though made a decision to allow them to participate in the election,’ he said.
Last Friday, Minister of Communications Fahmi Fadzil volunteered to run for the post of KLFA president at the committee’s new election congress.
Fahmi who made the announcement on the TikTok page introduced the line-up of his team which included KL United Sdn Bhd Director Syed Yazid Syed Omar as a candidate for the KLFA deputy president.
In addition to Fahmi, the Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad is also said to be intere
sted in the hot seat by naming several candidates to fill the highest position in KLFA.
Candidates nominated for the position of deputy president in Nik Nazmi’s list are Setiawangsa Rangers FC advisor Datuk Azril Mat Drus and Wangsa Maju Member of Parliament, Zahir Hassan in addition to four vice presidents comprising Senator Datuk Mohd Hisamudin Yahaya, Independent Director of Saudee Group Bhd, Datuk Sham Shamrat Sen Gupta, Member of Parliament for Shah Alam, Azli Yusof and Kuala Lumpur City Hall Executive Director (DBKL), Mohamad Hamim.
Abdullah Sani assumed the position of president after former Minister of Federal Territories, Khalid Abdul Samad resigned last March.
The election for the new leadership of KLFA will see contests to elect a president, two deputy presidents, four vice presidents and 10 committee members (Exco).
