ILOILO: The Police Regional Office in Western Visayas (PRO-6) on Tuesday urged local government units (LGUs) to have a command center and install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras to help address criminality.
PRO-6 Regional Director Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, during the Kapihan sa Bagong Pilipinas, said installing CCTVs in strategic areas of the community is a big deterrence to crime.
‘We have to compete with criminals who are also advanced in perpetrating crimes. We have to compete with them in terms of technology. That’s why one of our focus is the installation of CCTVs cameras,’ Wanky said, citing modernization efforts of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in response to the Bagong Pilipinas program of the Marcos administration.
‘Through our experience, there is also a big chance we can solve the problem when street crimes are captured on CCTVs,’ he said.
It is for this reason, he said, that he always emphasized during his courtesy calls with LGUs and peace and order councils the establishment of
operation or command centers, where the local police and civilian personnel cooperate to monitor the CCTVs.
Meanwhile, he said the ‘peace and order situation in the region is generally peaceful due to the absence of major crime incidents.’
‘No incidence of bank robbery, kidnapping, hijacking, and other high-profile cases were recorded,’ he said.
The crime rate in the region under the peace and order index during the first half of the year was in a downward trend, having an 11.68-percent decrease.
‘This year, it logged 5,529 incidents, lower by 731 compared to the same period last year, with 6,260. On index crimes, it posted a decrease of 339 incidents or 23.64 percent. The non-index crimes went down to 4,434 compared to 4,826 in the same period last year,’ he said.
