Kuching Airport Dazzles With ‘Seribu Rentak’ And ‘Selamat Datang’ For SUKMA 2024 Arrivals

KUCHING, The vibrant atmosphere at Kuching International Airport (KIA) has been alive with cultural festivities ever since the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) contingents started arriving, with the rhythmic beats of ‘seribu rentak’ and the lively ‘selamat datang’ dance setting a welcoming tone for this year’s games in Sarawak.

Athletes and delegates were greeted with wide smiles and traditional dances from various ethnic groups in Sarawak, and the arrival hall has transformed into a lively showcase of Sarawak’s rich cultural heritage, with dancers in elaborate traditional costumes waiting at KIA’s exit.

Jeman Lidup, 47, one of 14 participants from the Sarawak Arts Council (MSS), has been stationed at the airport daily from 7.30 am to welcome the influx of visitors for this biennial event.

‘Sometimes flights are delayed until 12.30 or 1 am, but we stay on to greet them and return at 7.30 am the next day,’ he said with a smile.

‘As the host of SUKMA, this is our chance to celebrate Sarawak’s cultural diversity
. The fatigue fades away when the contingents join us in the festivities,’ he said when met at the KIA arrival hall.

The ‘seribu rentak’ performance features a blend of traditional Sarawakian instruments, including the beduk, engkeromong, gong and sape, creating an authentic cultural experience.

Jeman, a Bidayuh from Lundu, was joined by his eldest daughter, Melanie Joyce Jeman, 22, who proudly wore the traditional attire of the Orang Ulu community.

The grand welcome and celebrations at the airport, which began on Aug 10, will continue until August 19, with a rotating display of traditional outfits from the Iban, Bidayuh, Melanau, Malay and Orang Ulu communities.

‘The best part of this experience is connecting with state and national athletes, capturing memories with photos and selfies, and strengthening our bonds as Malaysians,’ said Jeman, a father of three.
