‘Julian’ winds, rains persist in Batanes, Babuyan Islands

Manila: Typhoon Julian is already in Taiwan but continues to cause strong winds as well as heavy rains across Batanes and Babuyan Islands, the weather bureau said Wednesday.

Julian was last located 265 km. west northwest of Itbayat, Batanes, or in the vicinity of Nantou County, Taiwan, according to the 11 a.m. bulletin of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).

It packs maximum sustained winds of 165 kph near the center, and gustiness of up to 205 kph.

Strong winds will be experienced in areas under Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 namely Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the northern and western portions of Ilocos Norte (Pasuquin, Sarrat, Bangui, Vintar, Burgos, Pagudpud, Bacarra, Adams, San Nicolas, Dumalneg, Laoag City), and the northwestern portion of mainland Cagayan (Santa Praxedes, Sanchez-Mira, Claveria).

The weather bureau issued a heavy rainfall warning at 11 a.m.

“Moderate to heavy rains may be experienced in Batanes and Babuyan Islands from today (
Wednesday) until tomorrow (Thursday),” said PAGASA forecaster Chenel Dominguez.

Meanwhile, very rough seas continue to prevail over the seaboards of Batanes and Babuyan Islands, and the northern seaboard of Ilocos Norte.

Sea travel is risky for most types or tonnage of vessels, including all small seacrafts and motorbancas.

Dominguez said Julian will continue to weaken during the 72-hour forecast period.

The weather disturbance is forecast to weaken into a low pressure area and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either Friday night or Saturday, Dominguez added.
