Johor floods: Single mum prioritises saving documents, children’s new uniforms

KLUANG, March 2 (Bernama) — A single mother had only time to save her important documents and children’s new uniforms when flood waters suddenly rose in her house in Jalan Sawi, Yap Tau Sah, near here, at midnight on Tuesday.

Nor Azimah Ibrahim, 39, said during the incident she had just returned home from work and had to rush to save whatever was important.

Nor Azimah, who lives with her four daughters, however, was unable to save her car, a Perodua Kancil, as the floodwaters had already risen to two feet (0.61 metres).

“There was just no time to take anything else, just the important documents and school uniforms. I had already bought the important items such as school bags and shoes for the children’s new school term,” she said when met at her house, here today.

Nor Azimah, whose children are aged seven, 10, 13 and 17, is thankful that this time the flooding incident was not as bad as the one in 2006, in which her family was unable to save anything.

“In the previous flooding incident, the flood waters rose to the height of the windows and we were not able to save anything. We were left with only the clothes on our backs,” she also said.

Meanwhile, Idris Kassim, 52, said the flood waters rose quickly, leaving him and his wife unable to save anything other than important documents and their children’s school books.

Idris, who is a postman, was able to move two motorcycles to higher ground after authorities had earlier issued a warning of impending floods.

“Alhamdulilah, this incident is not as bad as the previous one, and I was able to save my important documents and children’s school books,” he added.

As of 4 pm today, a total of 28,099 flood victims have been evacuated to 197 temporary relief centres, with Kluang being the second-highest affected district involving 5,547 flood victims. (Segamat is the highest affected district with 9,818 flood victims).
