IM Quizon eyes to extend win streak in ‘Masikhay’ tourney

MANILA: Grandmaster-elect and International Master (IM) Daniel Quizon will try to keep his winning form in the 1st PMA Masikhay Class 99 Chess Tournament slated Aug. 3 at SM BF Parañaque City.

The 19-year-old won the 2nd Gov. Henry Oaminal Open Rapid Chess Tournament in Clarin, Misamis Occidental on July 10 and the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Tour of Champions Grand Finals in San Juan City last week.

Quizon will face strong challenge from GM Darwin Laylo, IM Michael Concio, Jr., FIDE Master Roel Abelgas, National Master Jasper Faeldonia, NM Al Basher Buto, NM Mar Aviel Carredo, NM Karlycris Clarito Jr., NM Oshrie Jhames Reyes, Candidate Master Genghis Imperial, Rodolfo Rivera and Allan Anthony Alvarez in the event offering a total of PHP50,000 in cash prizes.

Quizon is a member of the Dasmariñas Chess Academy under the guidance of Mayor Jenny Barzaga, Councilor Kiko Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.

He will also compete in the 44th World Chess Olympiad in Bu
dapest, Hungary on Sept. 10 to 23 .

The event is open to all chess enthusiasts who want to test their skills and compete against top players.
