Iloilo City wary about health effects of Kanlaon eruption

ILOILO: The local government here is preparing for the possible health effects of the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, particularly if volcanic ash reaches this city due to wind direction.

City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Officer Donna Magno, in an emergency press conference on Tuesday, said the local Department of Science and Technology informed them that particles could possibly mix with rainclouds.

‘We plan to meet with them to discuss further the possible scenarios should the activity of Mt. Kanlaon continue. Right now, we are on Level 2, and we hope it will not worsen,’ she said.

City Health Officer Dr. Annabelle Tang said among the primary concerns are respiratory effects, like coughing, throat irritation, shortness of breath, and bronchitis; and irritation of the eyes and skin.

They are also preparing for the psychological impact on residents.

Preventive measures include the wearing of face masks, preferably the N95 type or steonger kind, and goggles to prevent eye irritation.

The City Environ
ment and Natural Resources Office recommended air purifiers in homes and public buildings as part of air quality management.

The public is also urged to always monitor advisories and updates about the eruption.
