Ginger Cultivation in Betong to Boost Rural Income, Says Ahmad Zahid.

BETONG: Ginger cultivation has strong potential to generate substantial income for rural communities, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said. He emphasized the growing demand for ginger, particularly in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries abroad, citing discussions with a multinational company that indicated a significant monthly requirement of 10 containers of ginger.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, current production only amounts to one or two containers per month, which is insufficient to meet the demand. Ahmad Zahid highlighted the need for an increased supply, urging the people of Betong to target exporting 10 containers of ginger per month. This encouragement came during a gathering with locals at the Enteri Lengkoi longhouse in Samu Ulu Paku, Spaoh.

As part of efforts to boost local economic growth, Ahmad Zahid, who also serves as the Rural and Regional Development Minister, announced plans for launching the Integrated Rural Economic Development Project (PROSPEK) in Bet
ong. The project will focus on ginger cultivation and free-range chicken farming as its primary activities.

Ginger’s high demand from China, Europe, and the United States due to its use in cosmetics and pharmaceutical production further underscores its economic potential. The PROSPEK initiative, set to be the first project involving longhouse communities, is expected to benefit over 3,000 people. The project is scheduled to begin next year, with development continuing until 2029.
