TANAH MERAH, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) graduate, Wan Hairul Azwan Wan Abdullah, 35, has ‘fallen in love’ with free-range chicken (ayam kampung) farming as a career.
The Bachelor of Science in Fisheries graduate said he became interested in free-range chicken farming after seeing the lucrative income of other farmers through social media.
‘I am determined to pursue this field in my hometown in Kuala Paku. Coincidentally, a company involved in poultry farming was looking for participants for a free-range chicken farming project, and I seized the opportunity to fulfill my wish to venture into this field.
‘I previously worked for a company in Terengganu temporarily before returning to my village to take care of my ailing father and work independently,’ he told Bernama recently.
He said he was inspired to venture into free-range chicken farming after seeing the success achieved by others on social media.
Wan Hairul Azwan said he began with a pilot project of 200 free-range chickens, enabling him to
engage seriously in the poultry farming business in his backyard.
He said he continuously maintained a steady supply of free-range chickens to meet the growing demand, adding that he utilised social media to help promote and sell his products online.
He said free-range chicken takes just over a month before they can be sold for RM17 per kilogramme.
‘There are vast opportunities in agriculture and livestock farming, and young people without jobs should seize this opportunity as best as they can,’ he said.
Meanwhile, MyFundAction Kelantan programme manager Hariz Danial Safruddin said that 10 individuals from underprivileged backgrounds were provided with 200 chicks each, aiming to help them rise above the national poverty line.
‘They raise these chickens as part of a collaboration between the All-Party Parliamentary Group Malaysia – Sustainable Development Goals (APPGM-SDG) and MyFundAction.
‘They are given special training, such as coop maintenance, marketing, operations management, finance and other ski
lls to enhance their expertise in free-range chicken farming,’ he said.
He said the farmers are targeted to supply free-range chickens to local vendors, enabling them to rise above the national poverty line by earning at least RM2,500 per month.
