Filipino prelate elected VP of Asian bishops’ federation

MANILA: Caloocan Bishop Pablo Virgilio David has been elected vice president of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC).

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) news website reported that David was elected to the post during Thursday’s meeting of the FABC central committee in Bangkok, Thailand.

Meanwhile, Cardinal Filipe Neri Ferrão of the Archdiocese of Goa in India was elected to head the FABC.

Ferrão will succeed Yangon, Myanmar Cardinal Charles Maung Bo, while David will replace Colombo, Sri Lanka Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

Tokyo Archbishop Tarcisius Isao Kikuchi was reelected as Secretary General for a second term.

They will start their term of office in January 2025.

The FABC unites Asian episcopal conferences to promote solidarity and co-responsibility for the welfare of Church and society in Asia.

The conference’s central secretariat in Bangkok is the principal service agency and serves as an instrument of coordination both within the FABC and with outside offices
and agencies.

The group is composed of 19 full member-conferences and eight associate members.
