EKSAN 2024 Raises Public Awareness About Water Resources Conservation

KUALA LUMPUR, The 2024 National Water Resources Expedition (EKSAN) tour will follow the Sungai Bernam and Sungai Selangor basins as it aims to raise awareness about the preservation of the country’s water resources.

Department of Irrigation and Drainage (JPS) deputy director-general Amiruddin Alaldin said that the sixth EKSAN tour chose Selangor as the main exploration site, starting at Sungai Selangor and ending at Sungai Kuala Selangor.

‘The Sungai Selangor Dam is the largest dam and the main source for the irrigation system, contributing more than 60 per cent of the water supply needs in the Klang Valley, which covers Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and most of Selangor.

‘As such, I’d like to thank Selangor for hosting EKSAN 2024.

‘I hope the various activities planned under this expedition can empower the community to disseminate knowledge and take care of water resources for the future,’ he said after flagging off the participants at the JPS office here today.

He said the event aims to educate participants
about the importance of aquatic ecosystems and the environment as a whole.

EKSAN is one of the water resources awareness programmes under the National Water Balance Management System (NAWABS), held since 2017.

The expedition involves over 70 participants, including representatives from various government agencies, researchers, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), the media and social media influencers.

Some of the activities include visits to the Sungai Selangor Dam in Kuala Kubu Bharu; the Sungai Selangor Water Treatment Plant Phase II in Bestari Jaya; the Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park and JPS Kuala Selangor Irrigation Gallery.
