E. Visayas sends responders to aid storm-hit Bicol

PALO, Leyte – Eastern Visayas on Thursday deployed 172 responders, mostly policemen, to help victims of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami) in the Bicol region.

Of the number, 150 are personnel of the Philippine National Police (PNP), 16 from the Bureau of Fire Protection, and six from the Philippine Coast Guard.

PNP Eastern Visayas Regional Director Brig. Gen. Jay Cumigad said that as a member agency of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council, they are committed to helping during calamities.

‘In these trying times, we should never fail to render assistance to areas affected the most. This mission is made possible with the support of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), whose provision of essential resources equips us for effective action,’ Cumigad said during the send-off ceremony at the Police Regional Office 8 compound here.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council has also mobilized four vehicles, including three trucks, a bus, and a pickup truc
k. This is to enhance the mobility and operational efficiency of personnel throughout the operation.

OCD Eastern Visayas Regional Director Lord Byron Torrecarion said the deployment hours after the storm battered the Bicol region are crucial.

‘We are the only reinforcement that they are expecting this time since many areas in Luzon are affected as well. Our friends from Bicol came 11 years ago when Super Typhoon Yolanda struck. Now it’s time for us to show that we are one with them,’ Torrecarion told responders.

The police regional office assures the public that security operations across Eastern Visayas remain intact, with sufficient personnel deployed to maintain peace and order throughout the region.
