CUSTOMS (AMENDMENT) BILL 2024 TABLED FOR FIRST READING IN PARLIAMENT


KUALA LUMPUR, The Customs (Amendment) Bill 2024 aimed at promoting Pulau Satu, Forest City, Johor Bahru to enhance economic development in the area, was tabled in the Dewan Rakyat today.

The bill was presented by Deputy Finance Minister Lim Hui Ying for its first reading.

According to the blue book published on the Parliament website, the amendment includes provisions for special taxes related to the area in Act 235.

It also aims to stipulate that Pulau Satu will no longer be part of the Principal Customs Area, similar to Labuan, Langkawi, Tioman, and Pangkor.

Lim also presented the Excise Act 1976 [Act 176], the Free Zone Act 1990 [Act 438], the Sales Tax Act 2018 [Act 806], and the Service Tax Act 2018 [Act 807] for the first reading.

The amendment to the Excise Act 1976 [Act 176] is intended to remove Pulau Satu from the Principal Customs Area and include special provisions related to Pulau Satu, in line with the amendments to the Customs Act 1967.

Meanwhile, the Free Zone Act 1990 [Act 438], the Sa
les Tax Act 2018 [Act 806], and the Service Tax Act 2018 [Act 807] are to be amended to include Pulau Satu in the definition of ‘designated areas’.
