Cunanan carries Lyceum to 64-62 squeaker over San Beda

MANILA: Skipper Vincent Cunanan delivered two triples in the clutch to lift Lyceum of the Philippines University over defending champion San Beda University, 64-62, in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Season 100 men’s basketball at FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Tuesday.

The Pirates improved to 6-5 for joint fourth with the Letran Knights.

‘That time, the shot clock is going down, I’m open, (John) Barba saw me, so even though I was 0 of 6, I made it,” the 25-year-old Cunanan, who hails from Mabalacat, Pampanga, said after the match.

‘Of course, it’s different if your opponent is San Beda, which is a champion team. Any team wants to beat San Beda,’ he added.

San Beda’s Bryan Sajonia lost the ball in the ensuing play as time expired.

Cunanan, who is in his final season, finished with 11 points, two rebounds and one steal.

‘He’s my leader, my captain ball. I told him that when he’s inside the court, he’s the coach,” Lyceum coach Gilbert Malabanan said.

Gyle Montano finished wi
th 12 points, two rebounds and two steals for Lyceum, which bowed to San Beda, 63-79, in the first round.

John Bravo contributed nine points and seven rebounds, while Jonathan Daileg and Renz Villegas added seven and six points, respectively.

Bismark Lima scored 12 points on top of eight rebounds for San Beda, which slid to third at 7-4.

Mapua University defeated Emilio Aguinaldo College, 82-79, to gain solo second place at 8-3, behind College of Saint Benilde (8-2).

EAC fell into a tie for fifth with University of Perpetual Help at 5-6.

Jose Rizal University and Arellano University are in joint sixth with identical 3-7 cards, followed by San Sebastian College-Recoletos (2-8)
