Having developed a passion for crocheting since her teenage years, and skillfully producing various nylon thread-based craft creations such as bags, tissue boxes, ‘bunga telur’, and table mats led a housewife to transform her hobby into a thriving home-based business.
According to Rahimah Hassan, 58, observing her mother’s passion for crocheting at that time inspired her to delve deeper into the craft. Her dedication paid off, as she has since become a skilled instructor in the field.
Over the past three years, the mother of six has seen a soaring demand for her craft creations. What is even more impressive is that her clientele extends beyond the local community. She has been receiving orders from Singapore, especially through various online platforms.
“In the beginning, I was just experimenting, but now this is a way for me to earn extra income for my family. I started with crocheting a flower, and over time, I received more orders, including bags, tissue box covers, and ‘bunga telur’.
“I also learnt crochet craft techniques by watching YouTube tutorials, particularly for modern crafts to keep up with the latest designs,” she told Bernama at the recent Cuti-Cuti Mersing programme held here.
Rahimah, said crocheting requires high skills and patience. Among the most popular items are handbags, with prices ranging from RM40 to RM150, depending on their size and design intricacy.
“The most challenging item I have made to date are dining table mats, and there was even an order that took up to three years to complete. Meanwhile, the easiest items are small ornaments such as flowers and keychains, which only took 10 minutes,” she added.
She plans to crochet wall decorations as souvenirs with a Mersing and local island concept, featuring batik patterns, said the housewife who lives at Kampung Air Papan Tengah here.
