BAKU: Malaysia’s participation at the 29th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) has significantly advanced its net-zero emissions goal, said Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister, Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. He highlighted that through robust collaborations and strategic partnerships, the country has unlocked several innovative initiatives and substantial investments to enable Malaysia to progress towards becoming a net-zero nation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister emphasized the importance of building on this momentum, mentioning key initiatives such as the establishment of Carbon Market Associations, the partnership between BoomGrow and Azerbaijan, and the Memorandums of Cooperation (MoCs) between Malaysia’s Johor state and Japan’s Saitama city, as well as Citaglobal Bhd’s Framework Agreement with the Port of Baku. These initiatives were announced at the Malaysia Pavilion closing ceremony.
The Malaysia Pavilion, themed “Shift for S
ustainability – Climate Action Now!” attracted over 1,400 visitors from around the world. It provided a platform for in-depth presentations, expert-led discussions, and showcases on clean energy innovations, reflecting Malaysia’s commitment to global collaboration in climate action. Nik Nazmi noted the involvement of over 80 leading Malaysian organizations, reinforcing Malaysia’s dedication to positioning itself at the forefront of the global transition to renewable energy.
Nik Nazmi stated that COP29 was more than a conference; it marked the beginning of a sustained effort to enhance ASEAN’s climate resilience, energy transition, and environmental sustainability initiatives. He described it as a significant point for transboundary collaboration and collective climate action, setting the tone for unified, cross-border collaboration to promote shared responsibilities and actionable steps toward climate goals.
The Malaysia Pavilion theme resonated with Malaysia’s upcoming leadership role as the Chair of ASEAN
in 2025. Malaysia aims to position itself as a regional leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship. The minister reiterated Malaysia’s commitment to environmental sustainability and announced a motion focusing on reducing plastic waste ahead of their ASEAN Chairmanship.
Nik Nazmi stressed that Malaysia is on the right track in driving significant collaboration and advocating for collective action in achieving ambitious climate action goals. He highlighted the importance of emissions reduction through carbon market mechanisms, which is gaining traction in ASEAN, guided by the ASEAN Community Vision 2045.
The minister also addressed Malaysia’s advocacy for balanced finance, adaptation, and loss and damage mechanisms, with regional cooperation through ASEAN as a key pillar. He expressed optimism about leading initiatives that amplify ASEAN’s shared voice in global climate solutions, particularly in implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
Despite the closing of the Malaysia Pavilion, Nik Naz
mi emphasized that the collaborations and innovations forged at COP29 will continue to unfold. He looked forward to the next COP in Brazil, expressing hope for continued progress in Malaysia’s climate commitments and setting an inspiring example on the global stage.
Nik Nazmi extended his gratitude to those who contributed to COP29, from policymakers and state governments to industry leaders and community advocates. Malaysia’s participation in COP29, held from Nov 11 to 22 at the Baku Stadium, aims to bolster its commitment to a green economy as outlined in the Budget 2025. The Malaysian delegation of 200 participants, led by Nik Nazmi, collaborated with the Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Ministry and Malaysia Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation as the implementing agency. The Malaysian Pavilion served as a dynamic platform, hosting panel discussions and featuring insights from over 170 speakers, panelists, and moderators.
