COMMUNICATIONS MINISTRY TO LAUNCH ONLINE SAFETY ROADSHOW

KUALA LUMPUR, The Communications Ministry will soon launch an online safety roadshow to enhance awareness among schools and communities about the adverse effects of the internet.

Its minister Fahmi Fadzil said the programme aims to highlight the dangers of internet use, such as cyberbullying, scams and cybersecurity threats, while also educating on methods to protect personal data and the benefits of online platforms.

‘We see the need to begin in schools so that children are aware of and understand the dangers and capabilities of social media. For children under 13, we have prohibited them from opening social media accounts, yet unfortunately, many children are unaware,’ he told reporters after distributing free helmets to 150 students at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bangsar here today.

He said the roadshow is also designed to ensure safe internet browsing, particularly for children and families.

In addition, he said the ministry plans to hold a meeting with the TikTok social media platform next week to discuss st
rategies for managing cyberbullying issues.

Fahmi said he has held meetings with Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), along with Deputy Digital Minister Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, representatives from the Home Ministry and the Attorney General’s Chambers to review legislation that needs to be amended and tightened.

‘The purpose of the meeting was also to take immediate action to address the issue of cyberbullying. At the same time, there were some suggestions to clarify the definition of cyberbullying,’ he added.

On the issue involving the death of a TikTok influencer who allegedly committed suicide after becoming a victim of cyberbullying, Fahmi said the investigation had been handed over to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

‘I do not have detailed information about the investigation, and we are leaving it to the police,’ he said.

It was reported that a TikTok influencer allegedly took her own life after being a victim of cyberbullying in Gombak Setia, here.

The
body of the 29-year-old female influencer was found at her home on Friday morning.
