Celebrating ‘Jiwa Merdeka’

PUTRAJAYA, As Malaysians celebrated National Day on 31 August 2024, the theme Jiwa Merdeka-the Spirit of Independence-served as a profound reminder of the nation’s transformative journey and future aspirations. Marking the 67th anniversary of Malaysia’s declaration of independence from British colonial rule in 1957, Jiwa Merdeka called upon us to reflect on our collective achievements and the ongoing efforts required to advance as a unified and progressive nation.

Jiwa Merdeka captures the essence of our national identity and the rich multicultural tapestry that defines Malaysia. It symbolises not only our liberation from colonial constraints but also our enduring commitment to overcoming challenges that threaten our unity. This year’s theme emphasises the need for renewed focus on intellectual and economic progress, urging us to strengthen our dedication to these crucial areas.
