CDO eyes out-of-school youths for urban farming training

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY: The city government here is organizing a training session for out-of-school youths (OSYs) on agriculture practices, especially urban farming.

During Thursday’s launch of the city’s Oro Youth Month, known as “Kasadya 2024,” Josef Al Carmel Obenza, a representative of the Oro Youth Development Office, acknowledged the current trend of an “aging” farming industry, noting that only a few young people are engaging in the practice.

“Even though the city is highly urbanized, we are looking forward to these youths becoming our next-generation farmers with the support of our partners,” he said.

Obenza said the training of OSYs on modern farming practices is only one of the many events organized by the city government to celebrate Youth Month, which coincides with the month-long celebration of the Higalaay Festival.

Jerome Torres, member of the OSY Development Alliance, said skills training and orientation to digital innovations are also part of the different opportunities for youths to join.
