Cambodian historian hails support from Vietnamese volunteer soldiers

Phnom Penh: Vietnamese volunteer soldiers had an important role to play in Cambodia’s victory over the genocidal Pol Pot regime on January 7, 1979, helping save the lives of more than five million victims of the most brutal regime in the human history, Professor Sombo Manara from the Pannasatra University of Cambodia told the Vietnam News Agency.

He hailed the role of the Vietnamese Party, State and people who paid attention to, and found the ways to rescue the Cambodians during their hardest time.

The Professor also stressed that the Vietnamese soldiers at the time stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the Cambodian army and people during the country’s re-construction process and prevention of the Pol Pot from returning to power.

Speaking highly of the sacrifice of the Vietnamese volunteer soldiers, he affirmed that the Vietnamese side gave Cambodia pure support. The term ‘voluntary’ represents the purest moral and humanitarian values.

In three years, eight months and 20 days, the rule of Pol Pot killed nearly
3 million Cambodian civilians were killed -a quarter of Cambodian population at that time, destroyed all social facilities and pushed Cambodia to the brink of perdition./.
