CA confirms Angara’s appointment as DepEd chief

MANILA: The Commission on Appointments (CA) approved on Wednesday the ad interim appointment of Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary Sonny Angara.

CA Committee on Education Chairperson Senator Raffy Tulfo said his endorsement of Angara’s appointment is due to his ‘extensive legislative work on education, experience as the Senate’s Finance Committee chairperson, open-mindedness, decisiveness, and passion for education.’

“With this, I know that our teachers, who look after our students, now have an ally in DepEd. And I fully support his programs which would provide easy loan access for teachers and his program creating a system for the teachers’ career progression,” Tulfo said. “I look forward to working with you Sec. Sonny and seeing the changes you will be making in the Department of Education.’

Before Angara’s appointment was approved, he breezed through the confirmation process during the panel deliberation which only took less than 10 minutes.

Angara, who was a member of both the Senate and the Ho
use of Representatives, was excused by the panel from delivering his opening statement and was no longer questioned on his fitness to the position as a courtesy.

Senate President Francis “Chiz” Escudero said the swift deliberation was “right and a must.”

“Ginagawa ito by tradition sa mga dating miyembro hindi lamang ng Senado pero ng Kamara. Sa kaso ni Senator Sonny, dati syang mambabatas sa Kamara, kasalukuyan syang senador noong sya ay inappoint ng Pangulo bilang kalihim (This has been done by tradition to former members not only of the Senate but of the House of Representatives. In the case of Senator Sonny, he used to be a legislator in the House, he is currently a senator when he was appointed by the President [Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.] as secretary),” Escudero said during a press briefing after Angara’s confirmation.

He said members of both Senate and House of Representatives in the CA already know Angara well, as well as his policies and advocacies as former chairperson of the Senate Finance panel.

Along with Angara, the ad interim appointment of 15 foreign service officials of the Department of Foreign Affairs were also approved by the CA.
