More than 9,000 families comprising almost 30,000 individuals were forced to transfer to evacuation centers in different towns of Quezon province due to heavy flooding in their areas brought about by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami).

In a radio interview on Thursday, Governor Angelina Tan said the town of Tagkawayan has been placed under a state of calamity due to the widespread impact of the weather disturbance.

She said a portion of Maharlika Highway in Barangay Canda, Lopez town is now impassable, with flood waters more than a meter deep.

Tan said she has requested the neighboring barangays to provide relief and comfort rooms requirements to motorists and travellers who are stranded in the highway.

“The provincial government and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office staff work round the clock to provide relief packs to our distressed citizens. More than 20,000 food packs are distributed to evacuees,” the governor said.

She added they are just awaiting for reports
from the other affected municipalities for the declaration of state of calamity.

“So far, only Tagkawayan town has declared in a state of calamity, with more than 30 percent of their barangays affected by typhoon Kristine,” Tan said.

Other towns that experienced severe flooding that reached up to second floor of houses include Calauag, San Narciso, San Francisco, Gen. Luna, Buenavista and Lopez.

Meanwhile, Tan also intructed her staff to provide hot meals and basic hygiene kits to the 280 individuals stranded at Dalahican port in Barangay Dalahican in this capital city. They were supposed to travel to the island of Marinduque.
